Concept.
We have a vocational training program for our students. There are two skill levels. Those students who are unable to
pass matric (high school certificate) or do so in low grades will be put through skills that do not require much intellect
or academic knowledge (auto/ tractor mechanics, electricians, masons, carpenters, plumbers etcetera). Those who do well in
matriculation examination, but are not good enough to get admission in college will attend higher level of vocational
training like computer operation, technical assistants in industry, business concerns etcetera. Thus any child of REACH, upon
leaving the institution, would be equipped to earn a living for himself.
Vocational
training at REACH was started in 2005 by enrolling students of the community who were either school dropouts or not finding
anything to do after their matric exam. Initially, three trades were selected, that is, dress making for girls, electricians
course for boys and computer education. The duration of dress making and electricians’ courses is 12 months while computer
training lasts 6 months. This excludes two months of on job training for all, carried out in a relevant industrial concern.
To
date, two batches each of electrical and dress making classes, and four batches of computer class have completed their training.
One class of each trade is presently undergoing training.
Another
trade of tractor maintenance and repair was added in March 2007, and one more of motor cycle repair and maintenance will inshallah
be added in June 2007.
Pakistan
Bait ul Maal donated sewing machines to the successful students of dress making class, so that they are able to set up their
own business. A dedicated wing is being constructed for vocational training centre.
